One of the most common questions we hear: "What time should we leave?" It sounds simple — but the answer depends on the airport, the time of day, the airline and whether you're checking bags. Here's exactly how we advise our passengers.
The Basic Formula
The "buffer" is the part most people forget. A small traffic delay, a queue at the petrol station, a slow lift in the terminal — each is minor alone, but combined they can consume your margin. We always build 15–20 minutes into our recommended departure times, which is why we've rarely had a passenger miss a flight in twenty years of operating.
Departure Times for Every Airport
The times below assume a standard car-with-luggage scenario, a 7am flight departure, and normal traffic conditions. Adjust proportionally for your own flight time.
Bristol Airport (BRS)
from £55 →Bristol is quick but security queues can be long in summer. Add 15 minutes in July/August.
London Heathrow (LHR)
from £165 →Heathrow is the UK's busiest airport. Security and terminal distances are significant — allow 90 minutes minimum for long-haul flights.
London Gatwick (LGW)
from £215 →The M25 section can add 20–40 minutes at peak hours. For early departures, traffic is usually clear but leave the buffer.
Birmingham Airport (BHX)
from £175 →The M5 is generally reliable. Add 20 minutes for M5/M42 junction at peak times. Birmingham security is typically faster than Heathrow.
London Luton (LTN)
from £205 →Luton is a smaller airport — security is generally faster than the London hubs. The M25 north section can add time during weekday mornings.
London Stansted (STN)
from £245 →Stansted is the furthest airport from Bath. Single terminal makes it straightforward once you arrive, but the M25 north-east section can be problematic.
Special Cases: When to Add More Time
Early morning departures (before 6am)
Traffic is lighter but your own preparation takes longer. Getting from a hotel or short-term rental with luggage, loading the car and the fog of a 3am departure all slow things down. We always add 15 minutes to our recommended times for pre-6am collections.
Summer and bank holidays
Bristol Airport in particular sees very long security queues in July and August. Add 20–30 minutes to the airport time for summer travel. Bank holiday weekends at Heathrow and Gatwick can also be severely congested on the M25.
Long-haul flights
International check-in desks close 60 minutes before departure for most airlines, versus 40 minutes for short-haul. Security queues at Heathrow T5 can be long. For long-haul departures, always use our 90-minute airport time recommendation, not 75 minutes.
Travelling with children
Everything takes longer with young children — allow at least 20 minutes extra at every stage. A private transfer eliminates the car park and public transport variables, which helps significantly.
Peak M4 and M25 hours
If your departure falls during the morning rush (7–9:30am) or afternoon peak (4–7pm on weekdays), add 20–40 minutes to the travel time for any Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton or Stansted journey. Our chauffeurs monitor live traffic and adjust departure times accordingly.
The Chauffeur Advantage: We Calculate This For You
When you book a private transfer with Bath Airport Transfers, we don't just pick you up at a time you've guessed. We calculate your optimal departure time based on your specific flight, the current day's traffic forecast, the terminal, check-in close times and any early morning variables.
If the M4 is showing delays on the morning of your flight, we'll call you with an earlier departure recommendation. We track your return flight in real time, so if you land late, we're still there.
In twenty years of Bath to Heathrow transfers, we've never had a passenger miss their flight with us. That record is built on calculating departure times properly — not optimistically.
